Year in Amazon: Anders C. Krogh
As a child, Norwegian Anders C. Krogh dreamt of travelling to the rainforest. He wanted to live by the laws of nature, far removed from Western consumer culture. When he was 23 years old, he bought a one-way ticket to Peru and realised this seemingly impossible dream. A small tribe of Matses Indians accepted him into their community, and Krogh spent a year with them. The Matses shared their everyday life and festivities with him, and taught him their language, hunting techniques and rituals.
Krogh was happy living with the tribe and was going to spend the rest of his life with them, until he was shocked to see the damage caused by market forces as they invaded the rainforest. He realised that he couldn't do anything about the situation if he stayed with the Matses, so he returned to Norway and began fighting for the future of rainforests and their inhabitants.
