Formed at a refugee camp, Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars make music built on wartime experiences. Despite the grim subject matter, the songs are positive in tone, based on a foundation of reggae and afropop, with hope, trust and joy at their core.
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars was born when Ruben and Grace Koroma, Idrissa Bangura and Francis John Langba – who fled the civil war in their homeland and met in Guinea – started playing music to cheer up the other refugees. After the war ended, the members of the group returned home, where more musicians joined the band.
Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars became widely known through a documentary film based on the band. The group has showed itself to be more than a compelling story, releasing four albums and performing at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan and New York's Central Park Summerstage among others. The band returns to its musical roots with their latest album Libation, a record with plenty of warmth and a relaxed mood.
Yle Radio 1 will broadcast the concert during Etnoilta on Tuesday 26 May at 19.03. The concert will also be available for streaming on Yle Areena after the broadcast.
